The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a weather and climate update, stating that the current excessive heat being experienced in the country is expected to persist for some time.

With air temperatures reaching 41°C in the North and 39°C in the South, NiMET has outlined the implications of this weather condition and provided guidance on how to manage it.

Dehydration is one of the primary concerns during extreme heat.

NiMET warns that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to fainting, heat rash, weakness, dry lips, and even heat-related illnesses such as chicken pox disease and measles.

Additionally, respiratory issues may arise, and individuals with chronic conditions may become more vulnerable.

To mitigate the effects of the heat, NiMET recommends the following remedies:

1. Adequate fluid intake: It is crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids throughout the day.

2. Seek shade and use fans: When outdoors, find shade or create your own by using umbrellas or canopies. Inside, utilize fans to circulate air and create a cooling effect.

3. Wear light, breathable clothing: Opt for loose-fitting and light-colored clothes made from breathable fabrics to reduce heat absorption and promote ventilation.

4. Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours: It is advisable to limit outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm when temperatures are at their highest. Stay indoors as much as possible during these hours.

NiMET also highlights that model projections indicate that high temperatures will continue in the coming days.

Therefore, it is essential for individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
