Christine King Farris, the sister of Martin Luther King Jr., passed away at the age of 95.
The King Centre announced her death in a statement, noting that she died peacefully surrounded by her family.
Farris was not only the sister of the renowned civil rights leader but also a civil rights activist herself.
She played a significant role in establishing the King Center alongside Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow, after his assassination.
Farris participated in historic events such as the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery and the March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966.
She had a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Spelman College and earned two Master’s degrees in Education from Columbia University.
Farris dedicated her career to education, serving as a Spelman educator and director of the Learning Resources Centre until her retirement in 2014.
