MTN Group has joined forces with Meta to improve the quality of voice and video calls on real-time apps like WhatsApp across 12 countries in Africa. The focus is on delivering smoother, more reliable calling experiences for users on MTN’s mobile networks.

According to Our Correspondents via IT & Telecomms, the two companies are working together to optimize both the networks and the applications that run on them. This means mobile users can expect better performance and fewer disruptions during voice and video calls.

Since Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, MTN and Meta engineers have pinpointed key areas where performance could be improved. They’ve applied specific network adjustments to make sure the apps interact better with mobile networks.

Using deep data analysis and rigorous testing, the teams developed solutions to tackle call quality issues. These updates are already being rolled out across MTN markets, starting with Nigeria.

Early results in Nigeria show a 50% boost in critical network performance indicators. This has led to smoother and more consistent calling for MTN Nigeria users.

“We’re pleased with the remarkable improvement in our real-time communication services,” said Yahaya Ibrahim, CTO at MTN Nigeria. “It reflects our commitment to innovative customer solutions.”

The rollout will continue across the remaining 11 MTN markets in the months ahead, with ongoing monitoring to maintain and fine-tune the improvements.
