Until 1958, the Nigeria Immigration service we all see today was one of the departments in the Nigerian police, just like today’s Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and other departments there.
They were a part and parcel of the police until they were separated to stand as an agency on their own. At that early stage, they were known as the Immigration Department while the person in charge of it at the highest level was referred to as the Chief Federal Immigration Officer (CFIO).
In 1963, under the supervision of the then minister of Internal Affairs (now ministers of interior), Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the agency went through a lot of restructuring to become what is known today as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
What is the work of the NIS? What will I be expecting to be doing if I successfully become an Immigration officer?
The immigration service in Nigeria handles a whole lot of things. Below are just a few of them.
1.) They are in control of who enters or leaves the country. If you are going to travel out of this country or enter as a foreigner, the NIS will have a lot of part to play in that.
2.) They are responsible for issuing travel documents, including the Nigerian International passports, to Nigerian citizens within and outside the country.
3.) They monitor the Nigerian border 24/7 and note of the activities going around it especially concerning people entering or leaving the country.
4.) They also see to it that the laws and regulations concerning anything that has to do with travelling outside or coming into the country are carefully followed etc.
5.) Those are just some of the things immigration officers do in Nigeria. You will be doing the same too if you happen to succeed in joining them this 2019.
Who is the current head of Nigerian Immigration Service?
You may be asking.
The Comptroller-General Immigration Service (CGIS) formerly known as the Chief Federal Immigration Officer is the head of the service in Nigeria.
The current CGIS in Nigeria is Muhammed Babandede MFR. He has been the head of the agency from 2016 when he replaced Martin Kure Abeshi.
Since 1962, the agency has been led by a total of 16 people. Each of them being appointed by the Federal government (the president to be precise) to head the service at a particular time.
NIS Salary Structure And Ranks
The salary and ranks structure of the NIS is based on the consolidated Paramilitary Salary Structure (CONPASS) in effect in the country. It is the same salary structure being used by the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Customs and other agencies.
Below is how the ranks work in NIS:
1.) Comptroller General Immigration Service (CGIS)
The position of the CGIS is the highest position in NIS. The person that occupies this position is appointed by the President of the country. The tenure lasts for 4 years and can be renewed based on the performance of the person occupying the position in his first tenure.
2.) Assistant Comptrollers General Immigration (ACGI)
This position is usually occupied by different person at a time. Sometimes upto 10 persons. They control the main arms of the service and report to the CGIS.
3.) Superintendent of Immigration (AI)
This is the number 3 highest officer in NIS. The office reports to the ACGI.
4.) Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI)
This is the lowest rank of officers in the service where graduates start from. So if you are joining the service as a graduate, this is the position you are likely going to start from. As a matter of fact, it is the least position you will be starting with.
5.) Senior Inspector of Immigration (SII)
6.) Assistant Inspector of Immigration(AII)
7.) Immigration Assistant (IA)
8.) Passport Officers
How much is their salary?

The higher you climb in the service, the higher pay you will receive.
