Nigerian telecom regulators order networks to harmonise short codes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a policy that from May 17th, 2021, all telcos in Nigeria such as MTN, Airtel, 9mobile and Globacom will be required to use one harmonised shortcode for specific services.

Following the introduction of this new policy, subscribers of any network carrier will no longer have to memorise several different codes for their desired service.

The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) feature was launched 10 years ago by NCC which allowed mobile users to switch between telecom operators whilst still retaining their original numbers.

Similarly, this harmonisation regulates harmonised shortcode usage which is meant to provide an easier experience for Nigerians as well as provide a cohesive regulatory framework in line with global best practices.

The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria (ALTON) stated that its members are ready to implement the complex new policy effectively and consistently across all networks by May 17th,2023 when the transition process ends.

The proposed harmonised shortcodes

Call Center/Help Desk – 300, Voice Mail Deposit – 301, Voice Mail Retrieval -302, Borrow Services – 303, STOP Services – 304, Check Balance – 310, Credit Recharge – 311, Data Plan – 312.

Others are Share Services – 321, Data Plan Balance – 323, Verification of SIM Registration/ NIN – SIM Linkage – 996, and Porting Services (MNP) – 2442.
