Due to the high exchange rate for ticket pricing, Nigerians are facing soaring airfares, forcing them to postpone their travel plans to the United States and Europe.
Economy class tickets from Lagos to London, France, and other European countries have seen a significant increase in cost, ranging from N1.9 million to N2.2 million.
For example, a Lagos to France economy class ticket on British Airways now costs around $2,500, equivalent to approximately N1.92 million.
Similarly, the cost of economy class tickets from Lagos to the United States has skyrocketed to between N2.2 million and N2.6 million.
Business class tickets have also seen a surge in prices, with fares from Lagos to London, France, and other European countries now ranging from N2.9 million to N3.4 million.
This increase in airfares is a direct result of the exchange rate for ticket pricing exceeding N760/$.
As a result, many Nigerian travelers have had to adjust their plans or explore alternative destinations within Africa where visa policies are more flexible and costs are lower.
The National Association of Travel Agents of Nigeria (NANTA) has called on airlines to release lower fare options to alleviate the financial burden on passengers.
However, the impact of the new exchange rate policy has affected both leisure and corporate travelers, and the demand for affordable airfares remains high.
NANTA has urged African airlines to continue offering lower-priced ticket options to cater to the needs of travelers.
