The National Identity Management Commission has rolled out tighter security measures for Nigerians who want to make changes to their National Identification Number records online — www.naijnaira.com reports.
According to a statement from the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, shared via Punch, the NIMC now restricts self-service modification accounts to the exact browser and device used during initial registration. Any attempt to log in from a different setup could trigger an account lock.
“Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used at the point of registration,” Adegoke explained.
The agency warned that clearing the browser cache on the registered device will also reset the account, requiring an official unlinking process before access is restored.
If an account is locked, users have a maximum of five unlock requests. Once that limit is reached, no further requests will be processed unless handled directly by NIMC.
These updates aim to protect sensitive personal data and reduce identity theft risks. The Commission stressed that users must strictly follow the guidelines to avoid disruptions.
“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as the Commission continues to safeguard your data and improve service delivery,” the statement added.
NIMC advised Nigerians to use the official customer support email — nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng — for help with locked accounts or technical issues.
The Commission says the move is part of its broader digital security push as more citizens opt for online access to identity services.
