North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has given the green light for the launch of the country’s first military spy satellite, according to state-run media.
The satellite is set to be launched by the end of April, with Kim ordering the establishment of a non-permanent satellite-launching preparatory committee to ensure the launch goes ahead as planned.
He also called for the deployment of several reconnaissance satellites on different orbits in the future to establish satellite intelligence-gathering capability.
Kim criticized the joint military drills of the US and South Korea, saying they turn Seoul into an advanced base for “aggression and an arsenal for war.”
Tensions in the Korean Peninsula remain high after recent missile tests by North Korea.
