Ex-Military Governor Paul Omu Dies at 84, Nation Mourns

Major General Paul Omu, a retired senior officer in the Nigerian Army and former military governor, has passed away at the age of 84. His family announced his death in a statement released on April 30, 2025.

According to a report by Jane Ibe published on April 30, 2025, Omu died on Tuesday, April 29, and was described as a devoted family man, community leader, and patriot. His son, Oghenekome Omu, signed the statement on behalf of the family.

Paul Omu served as military governor of the then South-Eastern State from July 1975 to July 1978. During his tenure, he prioritized infrastructure projects and reforms that contributed to development in the region now known as Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

In 1985, he was appointed Commander of the Command and Staff College and became a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, which was the highest governing body in Nigeria at the time. He was later selected in 1994 to chair the Constitutional Conference Commission, playing a role in Nigeria’s shift back to civilian rule.

In September 2009, former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua appointed him to head the 10-member governing board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). He also led the Isoko Development Union as president between 2014 and 2015.

“Major-General Paul Ufuoma Omu was a family man, patriot, statesman, soldier, and community leader whose life was marked by unwavering commitment to the service of Nigeria and his beloved Isoko Nation,” the statement read.

He is survived by his wife, Senator Chief (Mrs) Stella Omu, six children, siblings, grandchildren, and other relatives.
