The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of undermining democracy in Nigeria and has called for the international community to impose sanctions on him, including a visa ban.
The PDP’s call comes after the President made comments suggesting that opposition parties lost the presidential election due to overconfidence and a lack of strategy.
The PDP described the remark as reckless and warned that history would not be kind to the President as his comments were capable of destroying the nation’s corporate existence.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the President had undermined democracy in Nigeria and called for sanctions, including a visa ban and travel restrictions, to be imposed on him and his family immediately after he vacates office on May 29, 2023.
The party’s demand for sanctions is in line with President Buhari’s request on February 17, 2022, in Brussels, Belgium, where he called on the European Union to impose “weighty sanctions” on those engaged in “unconstitutional change of governments” and those influencing the “process and outcomes of elections.”
The PDP also accused the President of interfering in the electoral process by making subjudice statements, ostensibly to influence the outcome and undermine the constitutionally laid down procedures for change of government.
The party stated that the February 25 presidential election was judged across the nation and globally as the worst in the history of Nigeria.
It also said that the poll was marred by brazen violations of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, Independent National Electoral Commission Regulations and Guidelines, and manipulation of processes.
According to the PDP, the presidential election was marred by the alteration of genuine results from polling units, the announcement of fabricated figures, and “climaxed by the vexatious declaration of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner.”
The PDP also stated that it was unpardonable that the President did not uphold the laws of Nigeria to ensure a free, fair, credible, and transparent election.
