Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has finally spoken out about the recent arrest of the Party’s Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure.
Abure was arrested by heavily armed police officers on charges of “Illegal Possession of Firearms” and “Threat to Life” after a petition was filed against him by a Factional Youth leader of the Party.
In a social media post, Obi expressed his concern about the arrest, stating, “Like many Nigerians, I observed the distasteful national television news reports detailing the humiliating arrest of the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, earlier today in Benin City, Edo state.”
Obi emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law in society and the need for citizens to respond to invitations from properly constituted authorities.
However, he condemned the manner in which Abure was arrested, describing it as “undesirable, demeaning, and unequivocally intolerable.”
He stressed the need to condemn such actions and actively address them in order to uphold justice and respect for the dignity of individuals within society.
Obi also highlighted the importance of adhering to due process, civility, and established arrest procedures, while emphasizing the presumption of innocence before the law.
As a leader within the Labour Party, Abure represents the face of political opposition in Nigeria. Obi emphasized that political parties are institutions of democratic statehood and should be accorded due respect.
He called for Abure to be granted bail based on his status, while the investigation into his alleged offense continues.
