In a significant shift of political allegiance, approximately 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State have defected to the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The state deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, officially received the defectors on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf at the Government House in Kano on Saturday, April 20.
The defectors, hailing from Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kano State, were welcomed by Hashimu Dungurawa, the Chairman of the NNPP in Kano State.
Dungurawa assured the new members that they would be fully integrated into the activities of the ruling party.
The defection is considered a blow to Abdullahi Ganduje, the immediate past governor of the state and current national chairman of the APC.
It is also seen as a positive development for Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ganduje’s political rival and a presidential hopeful in the 2023 election.
The leader of the defectors, Haruna Abbas, cited Governor Abba Yusuf’s leadership qualities and style of governance as the reasons for joining the NNPP.
Abbas pledged their dedication to working with the NNPP for the growth of Kano State. The photos from the defection ceremony can be viewed here.
