Receipts have recently emerged online, reportedly showing that former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello paid a total of $845,000 for five children to attend the American International School of Abuja. These fees were allegedly paid in advance from the state’s coffers and were intended to cover the children’s education until 2035.
The veracity of these claims is still under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Dino Melaye, a former Kogi senator, and Adeola Fayehun, a US-based Nigerian media personality, have shared these allegations through their respective channels.
However, it is important to note that NaiNaira cannot independently verify the authenticity of these receipts at this time. It is worth mentioning that the EFCC has already charged Yahaya Bello with 19 counts of money laundering, amounting to over N80 billion, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, the commission has faced difficulties in arresting him, preventing the prosecution from moving forward. One of the charges against Bello and his associates involves the conversion of public funds to personal use in February 2016. The EFCC alleges that Bello and others should have known that these funds were the proceeds of their unlawful activities, specifically criminal breach of trust.
Additionally, the EFCC has accused Bello of aiding a firm, E-Traders International Limited, in concealing over N3 billion in an Access Bank PLC account between July 26, 2021, and April 6, 2022.
