Pope Francis is reported to be “progressively improving” after being hospitalized with a respiratory infection.
The 86-year-old pontiff, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Wednesday after experiencing difficulty breathing.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said that the Pope rested well overnight and was working from his hospital room, where he also prayed and received the Eucharist.
While the Vatican said that Francis would remain in the hospital for a few days of treatment, his audiences were canceled through Friday.
It is unclear how his medical condition will affect the Vatican’s Holy Week observances, which include Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday.
This is the Pope’s first hospitalization since having 33 centimeters of his colon removed in July 2021.
