The Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have taken legal action against FIFA, alongside other European domestic leagues and unions.

The lawsuit alleges that FIFA’s unilateral decisions regarding the international match calendar have led to an unsustainable situation, negatively impacting national leagues and player welfare.

The leagues and unions highlight that the international match calendar has become oversaturated, posing risks to the health of players.

Changes such as the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup have been implemented without proper consultation.

This has led to significant disruptions, including the rescheduling of the African Cup of Nations, which will now take place during the European season, affecting national leagues and players’ careers.

PFA Chief Executive Maheta Molango emphasized the impact of these decisions, noting that major stakeholders like leagues and players are being ignored.

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, echoed this sentiment, expressing frustration over the lack of consultation and calling for change.

Meanwhile, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom defended the organization’s position, stating that FIFA is within its rights to set competition parameters.
