Premier League players are making their displeasure with the BBC’s handling of its Match of the Day presenter decision felt by reportedly discussing a ‘boycott’ from media duties in solidarity with Gary Lineker.
After Lineker was removed from tonight’s show due to earlier comments he made about the government’s new immigration policy, pundits Ian Wright and Alan Shearer publicly announced they would not be appearing on the show either.
In response, the BBC has decided that tonight’s programme – which kicks off at 10.20pm on BBC One – will only feature highlights from today’s six Premier League games, instead of their regular commentary team.
The Mirror reports that numerous players have contacted the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to discuss how to demonstrate their disapproval, and that it has stated it will support any unwilling to speak to the BBC before and after matches this weekend.
As well, six commentators who were set to contribute to the show released a joint statement saying they had decided “to step down” due to feeling it was inappropriate “in the circumstances”.
