Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly facing an uncertain future at the club, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe considering sacking the Dutchman.
As part of the rebuild under Ratcliffe, big changes are expected at Old Trafford over the summer to bring the Red Devils back to the top of the Premier League table. Ten Hag’s failure to build on last season’s success has resulted in the team currently sitting in a disappointing sixth place.
The pressure on Ten Hag has been mounting for some time, and the recent 4-3 defeat to Chelsea has further damaged his prospects. With the possibility of missing out on Champions League qualification, the FA Cup remains United’s last chance of clinching a trophy this season.
Club chiefs have already begun looking at potential replacements for Ten Hag, and one name that has emerged is Bologna manager Thiago Motta.
The former Italy midfielder has achieved great success with Bologna, currently sitting in fourth place in Serie A. Guiding Bologna to a top-four finish would be a significant achievement, considering they haven’t qualified for the Champions League since 1964.
Although Juventus is also interested in Motta, Manchester United has yet to present a concrete proposal.
Other managerial candidates being considered by United include England boss Gareth Southgate, former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter, and Liverpool target Ruben Amorim.
Motta, at the age of 41, is regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe. It remains to be seen if Manchester United will make a move for him in the coming months.
