Kylian Mbappé missed a penalty kick again, and Federico Valverde made a costly error as Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, losing ground to Barcelona in the Spanish league.
Mbappé had his penalty saved by Bilbao’s goalkeeper, Julen Agirrezabala, in the 68th minute.

Athletic had taken the lead in the 53rd minute through Álex Berenguer, but Jude Bellingham equalized for Madrid in the 78th.
Mbappé had also missed a penalty in Madrid’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League the previous week, though he scored in their 2-0 win over Getafe on Sunday.
Despite this, his struggles continued, and Madrid’s defeat left them four points behind Barcelona, who won 5-1 at Mallorca on Tuesday.
Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, moved up to fourth place with their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions.
