The reason for the rearrest of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), by the Department of State Services (DSS) has finally been disclosed.
Emefiele was facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and had been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
However, the DSS re-arrested him using an arrest warrant from a magistrate’s court on allegations of financing terrorism.
The DSS has yet to officially clarify the reasons for the re-arrest, and Emefiele’s defense team has not been provided with a copy of the arrest warrant.
This has raised concerns about the propriety of the arrest and has been criticized as an act of impunity.
