Concerns have been raised about Russia’s alleged plan for a coup in Nigeria, following the recent coup in the Niger Republic.

Deji Adeyanju, a public affairs analyst and convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to respond swiftly and decisively to the coup in Niger.

Adeyanju warns that if ECOWAS does not act quickly, Russia may attempt a coup in Nigeria in the near future.

He emphasizes the importance of Africa managing its own affairs and expresses his disgust and annoyance at the idea of new colonial masters in the 21st century.

Another Nigerian political commentator, Japheth Joshua Omojuwa, accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of leading a new colonization of Africa, expanding his influence and posing a threat to African countries.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, also highlights the potential consequences of Russia’s actions, stating that if Russia wins the war, it could lead to World War III.

In response to the coup in Niger, ECOWAS is considering military intervention to restore the constitutional order and has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerien military to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum.
