South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan has been granted bail of 20,000 rands ($1,113) following his arrest on charges of fraud totaling 1.3 million rands ($72,221).
The 73-year-old appeared in court at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court near Johannesburg alongside two co-accused: SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling.
The charges stem from allegations that Jordaan misused SAFA funds between 2013 and 2018 to hire a private security company and a public relations firm for his personal benefit, without the organization’s authorization.
Jordaan is well-known for his pivotal role in bringing the 2010 FIFA World Cup to South Africa, the first time the tournament was held on the African continent.
Magistrate Phillip Venter granted bail to all three accused, with their passports retained to prevent them from leaving the country.
However, Jordaan was allowed to keep his passport for now, with the condition that he must inform authorities of any official travel for SAFA duties.
