Samsung has come with a refresh for its M series with the Galaxy M31 and here is its full specs and price in Nigeria right now at Slot and Jumia.
The M series devices from Samsung usually focuses on the battery. They tends to deliver a very steady power experience.
In 2019, Samsung launched the M30 which broke the record and later that year, they launched the M30s with some new features and also with a big battery.
Now it’s 2020 and Samsung seems to keep the ball rolling with a new M series device which is the Galaxy M31.
The smartphone comes with a 6,000mAh battery like it’s older brothers and it supports 15W fast charging.
In this post, we are going to talk about it and also compare it with the M30s to see if there is any upgrade.

Looking at the design of the Galaxy M31, it looks pretty good and it comes with a vertical rectangular camera module.
If you compare the design with the older Galaxy M30s, you can see that nothing has really changed. It still comes with a vertical rectangular camera module like the M30s.
However, the change comes in the number of sensors the camera module is occupying.
The older Galaxy M30s comes with a triple rear cameras while this new Galaxy M31 comes with a quad rear cameras, that’s basically the thing you will notice.
It comes with the same oval shaped fingerprint sensor.
The Galaxy M31 back is made from plastic and it also has a plastic frame.
This is the same material used on the M30s so there is no upgrade here.
But the Galaxy M31 is heavier than the M30s based on the numbers on paper.
It weighs 191grams which is heavier than the M30s which weighs 188grams.
The M31 has a dimensions of 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9 mm which is same as the M30s. So what that means is that you would hardly tell the difference between the M31 and the M30s when holding both of them as they have same dimensions.
The M31 uses a Dual Nano SIMS slot which is same as the M30s.
If you wish to get the Galaxy M31, you can choose between three colours which are Ocean Blue, Space Black and Red.
The older M30s comes with three colours of Opal Black, Sapphire Blue and Pearl White.
So Samsung decided to follow a new colour dimension with the M31 which is cool.
Coming to the front side of things, you will notice a U shaped notch cut-out overhead the display of the Galaxy M31.
The notch cut-out is where the selfie camera is situated. There are a minimal chin and bezels here. Let’s take a look at the older version.
The M30s comes with this same U shaped notch cut-out for the selfie camera and it also has a small chin and bezels.
In terms of display design, the Galaxy M31 still retains the display design on the M30s.
It uses a Super AMOLED display which measures 6.4inches in diagonal with up to 16M colours.
The display uses a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 by 2340 pixels.
Taking a flash back look at the M30s to see if the M31 brought anything new in the display quality.
The M30s uses the same Super AMOLED display with a resolution 1080 by 2340 pixels. We noticed three new changes here.
Galaxy M31 uses a 411 ppi density while the M30s uses a 403 ppi density. Again, the chin and bezels on the older M30s seems to be a little smaller than the one on the newer Galaxy M31.
The M30s has a screen to body ratio of 84.2% while the M31 comes with a screen to body ratio of 80.9%.
The last one is that the display on the M31 comes protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 but the display on the M30s doesn’t come with any protection.
So here are the new things the M31 brought on the table in terms of display; 411 ppi density and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Hardware and Software
In terms of hardware and software, the Galaxy M31 kept all the features available on the M30s, it just left all the CPU features as it was.
The device is powered by an Exynos 9611 chipset which uses an Octa core processor clocked at 2.3GHz for the first four cores and 1.7GHz for the last four cores.
It runs on Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top of it. For graphics or gaming, there is a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU responsible for it.
The smartphone comes in two storage configurations which are 6-giga byte of RAM and 64-giga of internal storage or a 6-giga byte of RAM and 128-giga byte of internal storage.
As always, there is a Micro SD card slot where you can extend the storage even further.
Comparing it with the CPU in the older Galaxy M30s, you can see that there is no upgrade here.
The older M30s runs on Android 9 Pie with One UI on top.
You might say that the newer M31 is better because it runs on Android 10 unlike the Android 9 Pie version running on the Galaxy M30s, let me clear you.
The M30s is subjected to get One UI 2.0 update alongside Android 10, so bear that it in mind.
It is powered by the same Exynos 9611 chipset which still uses the same Octa core processor clocked at 2.3GHz for the first four cores and 1.7GHz for the last four cores.
Galaxy M30s even has the same Mali-G72 MP3 GPU for good gaming or graphics representation.
In terms of storage configurations, the M30s offers it’s 64-giga ROM with 4-giga byte RAM but the new M31 offers it’s own 64-giga ROM with 6-giga byte RAM.
The other configurations is same which is 128-giga byte of ROM and 6-giga byte of RAM.
Coming to the camera department, this is where we think the Galaxy M31 has an upgrade over the older Galaxy M30s.
The smartphone comes with a quad rear cameras which includes a 64-mega pixels main camera with f/1.8 aperture, 8-mega pixels ultra wide camera with f/2.2 aperture, 5-mega pixels macro camera with f/2.4 aperture and a 5-mega pixels depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
On the front, it has a 32-mega pixels camera for selfies or video calls with f/2.0 aperture.
This is a better camera specifications than the triple rear cameras of the M30s.
The triple rear cameras of the device includes a 48-mega pixels main camera with f/2.0 aperture, 8-mega pixels ultra wide camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 5-mega pixels depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
On the front, it has a smaller 16-mega pixels camera with f/2.0 aperture.
Now you can see that the Galaxy M31 brought some new improvements here.
First, with a quad rear cameras.
Second, with a bigger 64-mega pixels.
Third, with a 5-mega pixels macro camera.
And lastly, with a 32-mega pixels selfie camera compared to the 16-mega pixels camera on the Samsung Galaxy M30s.
The M31 has a single led flash at the rear likewise the M30s and it can shoot videos in 4K at 30fps and 1080p videos at 30fps.
On the front, it can also shoot a 4k videos at 30fps as well as 1080p videos at 30fps. The Galaxy M30s front camera can only shoot videos in 1080p at 30fps, no 4K shots.
They both supports electronic image stabilization (EIS).
Battery and Connectivity
What is keeping the light on in this device is a huge 6,000mAh battery capacity which supports 15W fast charging.
This is also the same battery capacity present on the Galaxy M30s with also same 15W fast charging.
Connectivity options includes Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and FM Radio. It uses a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, like wise the Galaxy M30s.
The Galaxy M31 is a good Samsung smartphone to get but i don’t see much upgrade over the M30s.
There are just few updates here and there. I will say that this an update of the Galaxy M30s, not an upgrade.
If you have the M30s, i will advise you to continue using your device.
