The Galaxy S20 Ultra is the latest flagship smartphone from Samsung which was released this year February 12 and the iPhone 11 Pro Max was released last year in September.
These two smartphones are flagship devices from this two brands respectively. They comes with a high end specifications and large displays.
In this post we are going to compare them to see which one is better and more value for your money.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Vs iPhone 11 Pro Max Comparison
Looking at the design of this two smartphones, they all look pretty good.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with a square shaped camera module which houses four sensors and a single led flash, there is a Samsung branding at the lower part of the back.
iPhone 11 Pro Max on the other hand comes with a square camera module housing three sensors.
As always, it has an Apple logo at the centre of the rear to show you are holding an Apple device. The back of the Galaxy S20 Ultra is made from glass which is a Gorilla Glass 6.
It has an aluminium frame while the iPhone 11 Pro Max back is also made from glass but it has a stainless steel frame.
The S20 Ultra weighs 222grams with a dimension of 166.9 x 76 x 8.8 mm while the 11 Pro Max weighs 226grams with a dimension of 158 x 77.8 x 8.1 mm.
S20 Ultra uses a Hybrid SIM slot while the 11 Pro Max only uses a Dual SIM slot with no memory card slot.
They both spot an IP68 dust or water resistant but the iPhone 11 Pro Max will survive under 4m of water for 30mins unlike the S20 Ultra which can survive 1.5m of water for 30mins.
They support Samsung Pay and Apple Pay respectively.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra comes in two colours which are Cosmic Grey and Cosmic Black while the 11 Pro Max comes in four colours namely; Space Gray, Silver, Gold and Midnight Green (matte colors).
So which design is better here?
Well in terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra looks more beautiful and attractive. It also has a smaller width than the iPhone 11 Pro Max which makes it more compact and more grip able unlike the 11 Pro Max which has a wider body. Durability wise, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is more durable.
According to a test, this two smartphones were dropped from a high building and the iPhone 11 Pro Max survived while the S20 Ultra is struggling to survive.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a matte finish which doesn’t feel slippery and easy to grip while the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a glass back which is quite smooth and slippery especially if your hands are wet.
So all in all, the design on the S20 Ultra is better and attractive while durability goes to the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Even the iPhone 11 Pro Max weighs more than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra but it is more durable. It has a stainless steel frame which is 2x stronger than S20 Ultra’s aluminium frame.
Coming to the display, the first thing you would notice is that huge notch cut-out overhead on the iPhone 11 Pro Max which makes it a little bit outdated and ugly.
But the Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with a tiny punch hole cut-out situated at the centre of the display.
Also, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a smaller chin and bezels than the iPhone 11 Pro Max which makes it to come with a screen to body ratio of 89.9% and iPhone 11 Pro Max 83.7% respectively.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra uses a Dynamic AMOLED display with a Quad HD+ resolution of 1440 by 3200 pixels.
While the iPhone 11 Pro Max uses a Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 1242 by 2688 pixels.
The display on the S20 Ultra is taller with 6.9inches while the iPhone 11 Pro Max display has a 6.5inches size.
Colour reproduction on the S20 Ultra will be more shaper and vibrant as it has a 511 pixels per inch density.
Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max which has 458 pixels per inch density. The display on the 11 Pro Max is stronger and solid than the one on the S20 Ultra.
It comes with a Scratch-resistant glass with oleophobic coating unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra which comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra display is better than the one on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, it comes with HDR10+ unlike the iPhone 11 Pro Max which comes with HDR10.
Again, the S20 Ultra comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and always on display.
So the display on the S20 is more vibrant and pops good colours.
Hardware & Software comparison
In terms of hardware and software, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset which uses an Octa core processor clocked at 2.73GHz, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with an Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset which uses a Hexa core processor clocked at 2.65GHz.
The S20 Ultra is running on Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI 2 on top while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is running on Apple’s iOS 13 out of the box but it is now upgradable to iOS 13.3 version.
Both the chipsets powering this two smartphones are running on a 7nm+ process.
For graphics or gaming, the S20 Ultra comes with an Adreno 650 GPU while the iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with Apple’s GPU (4-core graphics).
Both of this devices are available in three storage configurations but the iPhone 11 Pro Max doesn’t support an option to expand the storage with a memory card.

Galaxy S20 Ultra has a micro SD card slot for storage expansion and it uses a UFS 3.0 storage type while the iPhone 11 Pro Max doesn’t have a micro SD card slot but uses an NVMe storage type.
When it comes to the hardware and software aspect, the Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset is more optimized and can be faster than the S20 Ultra’s Snapdragon 865 chipset.
So the iPhone 11 Pro Max is a bit faster than the Galaxy S20 Ultra but the S20 Ultra makes better use of RAM, it can Keep your application for long without rebooting it.
All in all, the S20 Ultra is good in RAM management while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is faster, that’s a win win for two of them.
Coming to the photography department, the S20 Ultra uses a quad rear cameras of 108-mega pixels main camera, 48-mega pixels telephoto lens, 12-mega pixels ultra wide camera and a 0.3-mega pixels TOF sensor.
On the front, it has a 40-mega pixels camera with f/2.2 aperture.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max on the other hand comes with a triple rear cameras which includes a 12-mega pixels main camera, 12-mega pixels telephoto lens and a 12-mega pixels ultra wide lens.
On the front, it has a 12-mega pixels camera for selfies or video calls with f/2.2 aperture.
So when it comes to the camera aspect of things, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is better, it takes high quality pictures with lower saturation levels which makes it’s images closer to real life.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max on the other hand is better when it comes to zoom capabilities and low light shots.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra can also shoots videos in 8K but iPhone 11 Pro Max can’t do that. The selfie camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra is also better than that of iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Battery and Connectivity comparison
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is powered by a 5,000mAh battery which supports 45W fast charging, 15W wireless charging and 9W reverse wireless charging with USB Power Delivery 3.0.
On the other hand, the 11 Pro Max comes with a 3,969 mAh battery which supports 18W fast charging (50% in 30 min) and Qi wireless charging with USB Power Delivery 2.0.
The S20 Ultra will last longer and will also charge up quickly. For security, the S20 Ultra uses an under display fingerprint scanner while the 11 Pro Max only makes use of Face ID.
Connectivity wise, the S20 Ultra also has 5G network for faster internet connection while the 11 Pro Max only uses a 4G LTE network.
So in conclusion, you can see that both of these two smartphones are great but the Galaxy S20 Ultra is better than the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
It has a beautiful and attractive design, better display, better cameras and better battery while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a better durability test, faster processor and a better zoom capability.
