Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has weighed in on the recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, calling for calm among party members. He described the defections as part of a natural transition and encouraged true supporters to stay focused on rebuilding.
According to Naija News, Saraki responded to the wave of departures to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement posted via his 𝕏 handle on April 24, 2025. He emphasized that those who are not fully committed to the PDP’s mission should feel free to leave.
The former Kwara State governor stressed that committed party members should remain united and work to reposition the PDP as a reliable alternative. He urged members to stop blaming the ruling party and instead take responsibility for strengthening internal structures.
Saraki pointed out that the defection of Ifeanyi Okowa’s former running mate to the APC shows the challenges the party faces but is not a reason to panic. Rather, it presents an opportunity to reinforce the values and direction of the PDP.
He warned against creating a one-party system in Nigeria, arguing that a lack of alternatives is dangerous for such a diverse country. “A one-party state as being disingenuously designed by some people will not augur well for a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, multi-religious, and highly diversified society like ours,” he said.
He concluded by urging PDP supporters to remain hopeful and focused, reiterating that a smaller, more dedicated group can still bring success in future elections.
