After seven years of closed embassies, Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to reopen their embassies in each other’s capitals.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced the news at a news conference in Beirut, stating that the embassies would reopen “within days”.
The agreement was reached in China last month, and the two countries have been working towards re-establishing diplomatic relations ever since.
The relationship between the two countries began to deteriorate in 2015 following Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates’ intervention in the Yemen war.
This led to tensions and conflicts across the region, including the Syrian civil war.
However, with the reopening of embassies and warming relations, there is hope for a more peaceful future.
Amir-Abdollahian also confirmed that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi would be visiting Syria in the near future, marking the first visit by an Iranian president since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011.
