South Korean footballer Son Jun-ho, who plays for Shandong Taishan in the Chinese Super League, has been arrested and detained in China on suspicion of accepting bribes.
The 31-year-old midfielder was detained at a Shanghai airport on Friday and is currently in police custody in Liaoning province.
Son’s arrest comes as part of a wider crackdown on corruption and match-fixing in Chinese football.
He is also a member of South Korea’s national team and was part of the squad that advanced to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry has confirmed they are aware of Son’s situation and are providing consular assistance.
China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin has stated that they will provide necessary facilitation for South Korean officials to perform their consular duties.
