Sudan’s former prime minister, Abdalla Hamdok, has issued a plea for international assistance as the conflict in the country continues to escalate.
Despite a 72-hour cease-fire extension agreed upon by both sides, heavy fighting persisted in the capital, Khartoum, with Sudanese airstrikes targeting paramilitary forces.
Hamdok warned that the situation in Sudan could become worse than the wars in Syria and Libya, and urged the international community to intervene before the country descends into civil war.
The conflict has already claimed the lives of at least 512 people, with thousands more wounded and displaced.
Refugees have massed at the border with Egypt, waiting to flee the violence, while expatriates, including Americans, remain trapped in their homes.
The Sudanese army has been deploying jets and drones on residential neighborhoods, leading to a constant state of fear among civilians.
The fighting has also spread to the western Darfur region, where nearly half a million people remain in refugee camps.
