Following Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, manager Erik ten Hag criticized some of his players for not giving their all during the match.
Despite being up 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, United allowed Tottenham to come back and salvage a draw with goals from Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.
“The time is enough to recover. Our players are in demand to be ready. Today we are not ready. Some thought 90% is enough. But we lose focus,” Ten Hag told reporters. “That’s why we give goals away. We did not do our jobs in positioning.”
While acknowledging United’s busy schedule, which included a recent FA Cup semi-final and Europa League match, Ten Hag refused to use it as an excuse for the draw.
He stated that some players only gave 90% effort and lost focus, leading to defensive mistakes.
“I know they are not robots and it is a tough schedule. But when you are playing for Man United and playing away, you have to give (everything) on every occasion,” Ten Hag added.
Tottenham interim manager Ryan Mason praised his team’s character and unity after bouncing back from a recent thrashing by Newcastle, while Son Heung-min said their comeback was driven by anger over their previous performance.
