Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to return to action in the Carabao Cup clash against Nottingham Forest on August 27th, marking the end of his ten-month suspension for breaching betting rules.
The Italian was suspended in 2023 after being found guilty of breaking betting rules during his stint at AC Milan.
The Italian football federation confirmed that Tonali had breached rules prohibiting players from placing bets on football events organized by the federation, UEFA, and FIFA. Besides the suspension, he was also fined 20,000 euros (£17,380).
In May, the Football Association handed Tonali a two-month suspended ban after he admitted to further breaches of betting rules following his move to England.
Tonali’s suspension was initially set to last until August 28th, which would have prevented him from participating in the cup match.
However, Newcastle United confirmed that the ban ends a day earlier, allowing the Italian to be available for selection.
Despite the availability, it remains uncertain whether manager Eddie Howe will include Tonali in the lineup for the game against Forest, but the midfielder has been maintaining his fitness through regular training sessions.
