Jurgen Klopp has explained what happened between himself and referee Paul Tierney during Liverpool’s win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Klopp celebrated in front of fourth official John Brooks after Diogo Jota scored the winner in the 94th minute, resulting in Tierney showing him a yellow card.
He admitted his celebration was wrong and stemmed from his belief that a soft foul was given against Mohamed Salah in the build-up to Spurs’ equaliser.
Klopp cryptically suggested Tierney had said something untoward when handing him the yellow card and claimed the official was “against” Liverpool.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) refuted Klopp’s claims, stating that Tierney acted professionally throughout the game.
Klopp clarified what happened during his pre-game press conference ahead of Liverpool’s fixture against Fulham, stating that he celebrated out of emotion and anger and did not say anything wrong.
The Reds’ boss also revealed that Tierney told him it was a red card, but he only showed a yellow card and smiled in his face.
Klopp regretted the headlines being about him and hoped to move on from the incident.
Klopp’s apparent issue with Tierney dates back to December 2021 when he sent off Andy Robertson during a draw with Spurs.
