Reports have emerged that Chelsea wish to at least consider potential replacements for Graham Potter should the current situation take a turn for the worse.
Ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match with Borussia Dortmund, the Blues need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg result.
Despite there being some issues in boardroom confidence, Potter received backing after Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League win against Leeds.
Despite this, discussions have been happening about a fail-safe plan in case things do not go well.
According to The Independent, Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi are two names ‘at least being considered’ should such a situation arise.
It would however cost around £50million to remove Potter and his staff from their current positions.
Pochettino has the possibility of returning to Tottenham this summer in place of Antonio Conte and is known for his five-and-a-half years spent as manager at Spurs before being dismissed late last year.
Meanwhile, De Zerbi has done an admirable job since taking over as Brighton boss following Potter’s move to Chelsea, with increasing European qualification hopes.
Rams CEO Paul Barber even joked that he warned their cleaners that they would be headhunted by Chelsea.
De Zerbi’s contract does contain a release clause worth around £11.5million whilst Potter’s stands at £16m – figures which undoubtedly explain why Todd Boehly is so keen on giving Potter time to fix matters.
