Showdown Looms Edo, Bayelsa Move To Stop 'Controversial' Naira Redesign in Supreme Court

Drama ensued in the Supreme Court on Wednesday as Edo and Bayelsa States took sides with the Federal Government in a lawsuit brought by other States against them over the Cashless Policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Both states announced their support to the Federal Government, which they claimed had followed due process with regard to its implementation and managed to secure permission from Justice John Okoro as respondent-joiners.

Meanwhile, six other states: Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Sokoto were granted their applications for joinder in opposition to the government’s policy, joining Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara in this legal battle.

The Court instructed those involved to amend their statements of defence accordingly and set hearing for Wednesday, February 22nd.

Rivers State however opted out of this suit altogether and filed separately against the FG.
