The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians against traveling to the U.S. with the main goal of giving birth to secure citizenship for their children — www.naijnaira.com reports.
In a post shared on X (previously Twitter) via the verified account @USinNigeria, the embassy said visa applicants with such intentions would be refused entry.
The embassy explained that anyone suspected of planning a trip solely to deliver a child in the U.S. for the purpose of automatic citizenship will have their application denied.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S citizenship is not permitted,” the mission posted.
Consular officers are under strict instruction to assess intentions, and any hint that childbirth is the applicant’s main reason for traveling could lead to visa refusal.
A graphic included in the post doubled down on the policy, stating: “We will deny your visa if we believe your primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to get U.S. citizenship for your child.”
The U.S. embassy used hashtags like #VisaWiseTravelSmart and #USVisa to spread the message more broadly.
The U.S. Mission emphasized that this policy is in place to maintain the integrity of its immigration system and prevent misuse of visa privileges.
