The United States government has announced visa restrictions on individuals who are believed to have interfered with Nigeria’s democratic process during the 2023 elections.

The restrictions are targeted at specific individuals who have been involved in voter suppression through intimidation, harassment, or violence, as well as those who have manipulated vote results.

The visa restrictions are not directed at the Nigerian people or government as a whole, and the names of the affected individuals have not been made public.

The European Union and Chatham House have raised concerns about irregularities in the election result that gave President-elect Bola Tinubu his victory, but this will not affect his upcoming inauguration.

The election result is currently being contested at the Presidential Elections Petition Tribunal by Tinubu’s rivals, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
