The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has stated that Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, should not have contested the election due to his dual citizenship of Nigeria and Guinea.
Atiku made this assertion in his response to Tinubu’s preliminary objection filed before the presidential election petition court in Abuja.
Following reports that Tinubu allegedly obtained citizenship of Guinea, many people on social media debated whether having dual citizenship disqualifies Tinubu from running for office in Nigeria.
Tinubu’s association with Alpha Conde, the former president of Guinea, has also been called into question.
Atiku accused the president-elect of failing to disclose important information in his Form EC9 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including details of his constitutional qualifications.
Atiku argued that Tinubu is unfit to govern Nigeria, having been indicted for drug-related offenses in the United States and made to forfeit a sum of $460,000 as a compromise agreement.
Additionally, Atiku stated that Tinubu failed to secure the constitutionally required 25 percent of the votes cast in the federal capital territory (FCT), and that his return as the winner of the 2023 presidential election was “undue, unlawful, and invalid” because he did not meet the constitutional requirements.
