Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has revealed why he chose to snub the opportunity to become the new manager of Liverpool and remain at Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite being heavily linked to the role, Alonso stated that it “didn’t feel like the right timing” to leave Leverkusen.
Alonso, who joined Leverkusen in October 2022, has been instrumental in their success, with the team on track to win the Bundesliga and remaining unbeaten in all competitions.
He emphasized the positive atmosphere and team spirit at Leverkusen as key factors in his decision to stay.
“There were many reasons [for deciding to stay at Leverkusen],” Alonso explained in an interview with TNT Sports.
“After one year, we’re building a team, we’re building a great spirit here. The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together. I felt part of it. After one year, it didn’t feel like the right timing, and that’s why I’m committed.”
Although Alonso won’t be joining Liverpool this summer, he hinted that he may consider working in the Premier League in the future.
“You never know,” he said, indicating that he is open to new opportunities.
With Alonso out of the picture, Liverpool has reportedly held talks with Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting Lisbon, as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp.
Amorim has led Sporting to the top of the Portuguese top flight and has emerged as one of the most promising managerial prospects.
While no final decision has been made, Liverpool is actively preparing for the post-Klopp era.
