Xiaomi PocoPhone F1 ~ Cheapest Flagship Yet

I understand the name is weird but so is the price and the specs crammed in to this monster. It is the rave of the moment, talking point in the smartphone market and flagships killer. I am talking about the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 recently launched in India and Paris, France.xiaomi pocophone f1

Let me start from the beginning.

Xiaomi which happens to be one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in world and top of the list in India and China now has a sub-brand called Pocophone.

They won’t be the first company to do this. We have Tecno, Infinix and iTel as sub-brand of transsion holdings. Also, there is honor which is a sub-brand of Huawei.

It seems their aims at Pocophone is to;

  • Bridge the gap between high end specs and affordability.
  • Manufacture smartphones with a MIUI skin but more of stock Android.

Guys am talking about a $300 smartphone with snapdragon 845 processor, 4000mAh battery, Android 8.1 Oreo, Infra red face unlock, an awesome cooling system and capable camera set up to mention a few.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 Specs & Overview.

It is actually called Poco F1 in India not sure why that is. Xiaomi branded it has the Master of Speed at the launch event on August 22nd 2018.

Like in most cases like this, there are always some weak points. Well, in this situation it is the plastic build (for regular) and absent of NFC.

Every other things seems pretty decent to me. So let’s skip to the main part, what the F1 has under the hood.

Display & Face Unlock.

This phablet is 6.18″ in display size which integrates an IPS LCD Full HD+ resolution at 1080 x 2246 pixel, 403 PPI pixel density, notch featuring infra-red sensors for face unlock and 18.7:9 aspect ratio.

Basically everything most smartphones launched in 2018 boast of except for the part of infra-red unlock sensors which happens to rare.

These infrared lighting and lens couple with the selfie camera makes face unlocking in dark a breeze.

Other things packed in to the notch are the earpiece, proximity sensor and off course the front facing camera.

It was quite some moments ago that we migrated away from capacitive buttons at the bottom of the display for navigation to on-screen navigation. The new normal seems to be shifting towards gesture control thanks to Apple with the iPhone X.

Protecting the elegant display for scratch and dust is corning gorilla glass.

Design & Fingerprint.

To every notch comes a chin. The Pocophone F1 isn’t different in the aspect though i will confess that the chin looks slightly thicker than usual.

On the top resides the 3.5mm headphone jack and microphone.

I an guessing the usual IR blaster that allows you to control smart devices like Television, Decoders, Fridges etc has been integrated alongside those in the notch. Xiaomi is one of the few manufacturers that still ships smartphone with this feature.

At the bottom, we have speaker grills flanking the USB Type-C port on both sides. However, just one of them is a speaker. Talking of speaker, the earpiece also assists the main speaker.

The regular version is made of plastic material and there is also an armoured edition with Kevlar back.

On the right are the power buttons and the volume up and down rockers. At the left resides the hybrid sim card slot. Meaning you can either use two sims or a sim and an sd card.

Now shifting to the back, there is vertical arrangement of dual cameras and fingerprint scanner with the LED flash light to their right.

At the rear bottom is the Pocophone boldly branded. It also indicates it is designed by xiaomi.

Processor, OS Version & Storage.

Poco F1 is powered by the current most powerful chipset atleast till Qualcomm gives it a successor in the last quarter of 2018. Alongside the snapdragon 845 is the Adreno 630 GPU which are both assisted by 6GB RAM for regular version and 8GB for the armoured version. It register an antutu score of over 250,000.

To make things interesting, xiaomi has introduces the liquid cooling system similar to what’s seen in gaming laptop which also find its way into the recently launched Samsung galaxy note 9.

Oh! here is how the system works. Once the system senses heat dissipation, the liquid evaporates to vapor which cools it down and condenses back to liquid.

Xiaomi Poco F1 runs on special version of MIUI (v9.6) called MiUi for Poco based on Android 8.1 Oreo. It combines both the stock android and original Mi skin. One of the noticeable features of the pure android is the app drawer.

The company (Pocophone) promised atleast a security patches every quarter.

Camera, Battery & Connectivity.

On board the F1 Poco, we have 20MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. The front camera also features the super pixel technology seen on the Xiaomi Mi 8. Others are AI scene recognition, beauty mode and video mode.armoured kevlar pocophone f1

The rear camera on the hand is a 12MP (f/1.9 aperture, 1.4um pixel size) + 5MP (f/2.0 aperture, 1.12um pixel size) dual sensors featuring dual pixel auto-focus, dual LED flash, HDR, panorama etc.

At the power department, the Poco F1 is packed with a 4000 mAh battery capacity which can last a whole day even on heavy usage. That didn’t come as a surprise to me though considering the cooling system and flagship processor. It supports quick charge 3.0.

Connectivity wise, it supports dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, FM Radio, USB Type-C with support for OTG. But lacks the support of NFC meaning no Android Pay or related.

How Much is Xiaomi PocoPhone F1 in Naira.

One of the important things to touch while talking about a smartphone is its price. After going through all the capabilities of this device, one would be expecting to hear something like $600.

But no, the base model is actually half of that. Check the full price below. One more thing it won’t be officially available in Nigeria. But as usual, you can get it on Chinese websites like Gearbest and Aliexpress.

Poco F1 Price in Nigeria

6GB, 64GB$300 (~ 109,000 Naira)
6GB, 128GB$340 (~ 122,400 Naira)
8GB, 256GB$415 (~ 151,000 Naira)
8GB, 256GB {Armoured Edition with Kevlar back}$430 (~ 156,000 Naira)

This device is obviously the new king of budget flagships with a price that blows away the competitive price of the OnePlus 6.
