Born on December 14, 1958, in Enugu, Nigeria, Andy Uba hails from Uga in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He attended Boys High School in Awkunanaw before reportedly enrolling at Concordia University in Canada.
However, Concordia University later clarified that while a person named Emmanuel Uba was admitted, he did not complete any program there. This fact would later become part of a controversy regarding his educational qualifications.
Political Career
Andy Uba’s political involvement took off in the late 1990s while he was in the United States, where he supported Nigeria’s 1999 presidential election campaign. Afterward, he returned to Nigeria and was appointed Special Assistant on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs to then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. During a 2003 visit by President Obasanjo to the US, Uba was described as the president’s trusted aide and the primary gatekeeper for those wanting access to the president.
In 2007, Uba contested in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Anambra State governorship and initially won the April 2007 election. However, his victory was challenged by former Governor Peter Obi, who argued that his 2003 term had not yet expired. The court agreed, nullifying Uba’s election in June 2007.
After switching to the Labour Party, Uba ran in the 2010 Anambra gubernatorial election but came third. He later returned to the PDP and successfully contested for the Anambra South Senatorial seat in 2011, winning with 63,316 votes. His senatorial win was also contested due to claims regarding his educational credentials, particularly allegations that he falsified his West African School Certificate (WASC) and university degrees.
