Filmhouse Cinemas has become a recognizable name across Nigeria for moviegoers seeking a premium cinematic experience. The brand traces its origins to two Nigerian entrepreneurs who brought their global cinema expertise into the local market, determined to deliver quality and innovation.

How Filmhouse Cinemas Began

Founded by Kene Okwuosa and Moses Babatope, Filmhouse Cinemas began operations in 2012 with a clear focus on transforming Nigeria’s movie-viewing culture. Their journey started in Surulere, Lagos, after securing funding from the Bank of Industry to bring the concept to life.

Driven by a clear understanding of the local entertainment landscape, they identified a market underserved in cinema infrastructure and experience. What began as a single location quickly turned into a fast-growing network of cinemas across Nigeria.

By 2018, Filmhouse had grown to become the largest cinema operator in Nigeria and held the third position on the African continent. Though the initial plan was to launch 25 locations in six years, the brand has expanded to 15 branches in nine states as of now.

Their continued growth is backed by a dedicated management team, customer-first approach, and creative marketing strategies. Every aspect of their expansion has been structured around meeting the rising demand for quality entertainment nationwide.

Filmhouse’s Venture into Hospitality

In 2016, Filmhouse expanded into hospitality by opening the first IMAX theatre in West Africa. This facility is located in Lekki, Lagos, and was established in partnership with Canada’s IMAX Corporation.

The IMAX theatre stands out with advanced projection systems and enhanced visuals for a premium movie experience. It includes two premium screens with 75 seats each, along with two additional private viewing rooms.

One of the private rooms is The CUBE, a luxury option for up to 8 guests. It comes with sofas, a private restroom, intercom, and a price of ₦120,000 for a 3-hour session with buffet and drinks.

Another space, The Signature screen, seats 33 guests and is suitable for both personal and corporate bookings. Rates are ₦8,000 on weekdays and ₦10,000 on weekends and come with complimentary popcorn, drinks, water, appetizers, and access to a custom menu.

The IMAX facility includes a high-end restaurant setup with the Signature Bar, Terrace Bar, and Lounge. Visitors can dine anywhere within the building while enjoying their movie or event.

Weekday hours run until midnight, and operations extend to 2 AM on weekends.

Filmhouse in Movie Production

Filmhouse is also involved in movie production through its sister company, FilmOne Entertainment. This arm has co-produced some of Nigeria’s most commercially successful films.

Their portfolio includes The Wedding Party series, Merry Men, and The Set-Up. In addition to production, FilmOne handles content aggregation for streaming services.

FilmOne works directly with Netflix to distribute Nollywood titles globally. It also has an exclusive agreement with Disney to distribute its content in Nigeria, Ghana, and Liberia.
