History Of Nigerian National Anthem And Pledge

It was the British National anthem “God Save the Queen” that Nigeria sang as her anthem between 1914 to 1960 when she gained her independence.

After Nigeria’s independence, Lillian Jean Williams created the lyrics, while Frances Berda composed Nigeria’s first post-independence national anthem: “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”. This former Nigerian anthem was used from 1960 till 1978 before the government (military regime) of Olusegun Obasanjo decided on a new national anthem for Nigeria.

The government organized a contest for the “best lyrics” for a new Nigerian anthem from which the best of all the suggested lines and phrases were used to compose Nigeria’s brand-new anthem: “Arise, O Compatriots”.

The authors of the phrases and lines that were used in Nigeria’s second anthem song include Eme Etim Akpan; John A. Ilechukwu; B. A. Ogunnaike; P. O. Aderibigbe; and Dr Sota Omoigui.

Who Composed The Nigerian National Anthem

Pa Benedict Odiase, who was Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Director of Music in the Nigeria Police Band at the time, was the one who took all the words and organised them into Nigeria’s current national anthem song popularly referred to as “Arise, O Compatriots”.

The Nigeria national pledge on the other hand was written by a princess from the Iji ruling house of Saki, Oyo State, Prof (Mrs.) Felicia Adebola Adedoyin in 1976.

British National Anthem

“God Save The Queen” Lyrics

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen!

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

Old Nigerian National Anthem

Lyrics Of “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”

Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all are proud to serve
Our sovereign native land
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honor’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.

Nigeria’s New (Second) National Anthem

“Arise, O Compatriots” Lyrics

Verse 1: (first stanza)

Arise, O compatriots
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labor of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom
Peace and unity.

Second Stanza Of Nigerian National Anthem

Oh God of creation
Direct our noble cause
And guide our leaders right
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace And justice shall reign.
