Bella Montoya, a retired nurse from Ecuador, made headlines when she woke up inside her coffin during her wake earlier this month.
However, Montoya passed away after a week of intensive care in the hospital.
Doctors had declared her dead after she suffered a possible stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Montoya’s family had gathered for a wake on June 9, just hours after she was declared dead the first time, but they heard a sound coming from inside the coffin.
Montoya was immediately returned to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her passing.
Her sister has filed a formal complaint and is seeking answers about the doctor who declared Montoya dead.
Montoya’s remains have been sent back to the same funeral home where she regained consciousness, and she will be buried at a public cemetery.
The cause of her death was an ischemic stroke, but the investigation surrounding the case has not been disclosed.
