Former Nigerian boxer, Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Okorodudu, passed away at a private hospital in Lawandon, Lagos after battling with a foot ulcer that left him bedridden.
His wife, Adenike, confirmed his death but stated that the hospital was refusing to release his body until the outstanding medical bill of N600,000 is paid.
Okorodudu, aged 64, had been transferred between different hospitals due to lack of funds before being brought to the Lawanson hospital.
The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and the President of the West Africa Boxing Union, Remi Aboderin, also confirmed his passing.
The Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Azania Omo-Agege, had sent money to Okorodudu’s wife for the hospital bills prior to his death.
Okorodudu represented Nigeria at the 1984 Olympic Games and was a gold medalist at the 1979 National Sports Festival.
His medical issues began in 2020 and he had previously undergone successful surgery for a boil affliction before being diagnosed with a foot ulcer and suffering a stroke.
