Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has stated that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates have the lawful right to proceed with their planned strike and protest, despite an ongoing lawsuit.
In a letter from Falana Falana Chambers, solicitors to the NLC, it was emphasized that the NLC does not intend to disobey the court order and that participating in peaceful rallies is within the constitutional rights of Nigerians.
Falana argued that peaceful protests cannot be translated as embarking on a strike and cited a previous court case that upheld the fundamental right of Nigerians to protest without a permit.
The letter also called on the Nigeria Police Force to comply with the Police Establishment Act 2020 and advised the NLC and its allies to conduct the rallies peacefully.
The court had previously restrained the NLC and the Trade Union Congress from going on strike to protest the removal of petrol subsidy by the government.
The NLC had issued a notice to begin a nationwide strike on August 2 to protest the subsidy removal and its impact on the people.
