Former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has publicly asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to clear a ₦45 billion debt allegedly owed to the late Chief MKO Abiola by the federal government. Lamido made this statement at the launch of his autobiography, Being True To Myself, in Abuja on May 12, 2025.

According to a report by Punch, Lamido revealed that the debt stems from contracts carried out by Abiola’s company, International Telephone and Telecommunication, for the Ministry of Communications. He claimed that the military regime, concerned about financial consequences, not only annulled the June 12, 1993 election but also neglected to settle the outstanding sum.

During his remarks at the event, Lamido described the situation as a double blow for Abiola: “One, he was not given the presidency, and two, he is being owed.” He appealed directly to the Minister of Information—who represented the President—to convey the message to Tinubu, stating, “Please tell him to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. When this money is paid, the chapter of June 12 will be closed.”

Lamido’s call adds a new dimension to the June 12 conversation, linking the unresolved financial matter to the larger issue of democratic justice. His remarks also bring public attention to the financial claims associated with Abiola’s legacy, years after the election was annulled.

The event, which doubled as a book launch and a platform for reflection, drew several notable attendees, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. Lamido expressed appreciation to each of them and to the committee members who helped organize the event.
