Arne Slot’s first season as Liverpool manager ended in Premier League glory, but his thoughts are already turning to Europe. The Dutch coach wants to bolster his squad with what he describes as “extra weapons” ahead of the new campaign.
According to The Mirror, Slot admitted the Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain in March exposed a key flaw in his team — the lack of depth when it mattered most. Despite Liverpool’s strong showing in the league phase, they were undone by PSG in the first knockout round. Reflecting on the defeat, he said, “We were in the wrong place in the wrong time, facing Paris Saint-Germain.”
Slot is not just looking to add numbers but players who bring something different to the table. He acknowledged that his team’s momentum made him hesitant to rotate earlier in the season, which might have left the squad fatigued for that crucial Champions League tie.
“I think at that moment of time, that wasn’t our best part of the season… So you could argue if I needed to have rotated a bit more between November and March.”
With major clubs like Manchester City spending upwards of £200 million, Slot knows Liverpool must be active in the market. Reports suggest Jeremie Frimpong is close to a €30 million move to Anfield, with Milos Kerkez also on the radar.
While the core of the team remains intact, Slot wants to ensure they’re better equipped for another deep European run next season. “Maybe by using the transfer market,” he added. “That is what we are trying to achieve. That will make us only stronger.”
Liverpool’s title-winning campaign has set the bar high, but Slot appears focused on ensuring that European success doesn’t continue to slip through the cracks.
