A recent study involving 889 colon cancer patients reveals that tailored exercise after chemotherapy improves survival rates and reduces cancer recurrence, according to research published in Science Direct.

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer or bowel cancer, develops in the large intestine (colon). New cases worldwide are expected to reach 3.2 million by 2040, according to the study in Science Direct.

Researchers enrolled patients in a three-year structured exercise program soon after chemotherapy. The exercise plans varied individually and included activities like brisk walking, swimming, cycling, and circuit classes. These were compared with a control group that only received health education materials.

After five years, 80% of the exercise group remained cancer-free compared to 74% in the control group. At eight years, the overall survival rate in the exercise group reached 90%.

Professor Vicky Coyle, UK lead researcher, said, “Our study gives clear, encouraging evidence that physical activity can reduce the risk of cancer returning for some people with colon cancer. We now need to work with policymakers and healthcare providers to embed exercise into treatment plans where appropriate.”

Margaret Tubridy, a 69-year-old participant from North Belfast, shared her experience: “Taking part in the trial helped me so much – I am stronger, fitter, and my anxiety is better. I never thought at 69 years of age I would be able to do all of this – I am chuffed to bits.”
