Veteran Highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, celebrated for the iconic song “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” has died at 95.
According to his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, the cultural icon passed away Friday night at 8 p.m. at 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu following a prolonged illness.
Mike Ejeagha was a prominent figure in Nigerian music during the 1980s, renowned for integrating Igbo proverbs and storytelling into his songs.
His timeless 1983 hit “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo” gained renewed popularity in 2024 when comedian and influencer Brain Jotter used it in a viral dance challenge that swept across social media platforms.
Emma Ejeagha shared, “He was not just a musician but a custodian of Igbo culture who preserved oral traditions through his music.”
