Nigerian presidency apology, national honours mistake, Democracy Day speech

The Nigerian presidency has apologised for listing Reuben Fasoranti and Edwin Madunagu as deceased recipients in the national honours presented during President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech.

NaijNaira learnt the ceremony took place at the joint session of the National Assembly, where Tinubu honoured 66 individuals for their roles in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Among those recognised were Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Humphrey Nwosu, and Kudirat Abiola, who were correctly named in the posthumous category.

However, the inclusion of Fasoranti and Madunagu under the same category was incorrect, as both men are alive. Fasoranti is the Afenifere leader, and Madunagu is known for his work as an author and mathematician.

The mistake quickly gained attention on social media, prompting an official apology from Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy.

“Both distinguished individuals are very much alive and, therefore, should not have appeared in the posthumous category,” Onanuga stated.

The presidency has promised to correct the mistake across all government platforms.
