The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has turned down the notice sent by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing procedural problems.

According to Leadership News, INEC explained that the PDP’s notice did not meet the conditions outlined in Part 2(12)3 of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

INEC made this clear in a letter dated June 13, 2025, stressing that the notice must carry the joint signatures of the party’s national chairman and national secretary.

“The commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance with the requirement that the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission,” the letter stated.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the construction of a new INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu said, “Today’s ceremony is not merely about bricks and mortar. It is about the strength of our democracy, our institutions’ independence, and the future of our electoral integrity.”

He also commended the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, for pushing the project forward, saying, “The FCT Minister has taken another bold step in ensuring the protection of our democracy by initiating this laudable project. I salute his courage as I am proud of him.”

Tinubu urged the contractors to focus on delivering quality, saying, “You are not just building a headquarters, you are building trust in our nation.”

The project is scheduled to be completed within 24 months.
