The 100th National Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party ended without drama or division, as former Senate President Bukola Saraki said there was “no victor and no vanquished,” NaijNaira can report.
In a statement shared Monday evening, Saraki told Leadership News that the meeting could have marked a serious split, but leaders instead chose unity.
He described the session as a turning point, noting that the party had the option to break apart or move forward together.
“The winner today is the PDP. Another winner is Nigeria’s democracy because, without a vibrant opposition, democracy dies,” Saraki said.
He stressed that PDP members across the country—spread across all 774 LGAs—also gained from the resolution reached.
Saraki added that the leaders agreed to set aside their differences and focus on restoring internal trust while giving peace a real chance.
He said the meeting was significant for two reasons: “One, we all agreed on the need for unity. Two, the spirit of give and take dominated our frank discussions.”
He thanked party leaders who gave up personal interests for the sake of rebuilding the PDP into a credible opposition force.
The next NEC meeting is scheduled for July 23, followed by preparations for the party’s national convention.
Saraki emphasized that the party still has much to do and must hold onto the spirit of cooperation going forward.
“We are determined to make the party a strong opposition, capable of winning the next general election and serving our people better,” he said.
